Asbestos Abatement & Interior Remodel
In preparation for a re-roofing project, during which
the contractor was to install new roof drains, Kane
and Johnson Architects was called to investigate
areas above the ceilings in Heintz Center, Buildings
A and B, for asbestos and other hazardous materials
that might be disturbed by the installation of new
roof drains.
The investigation revealed the need to comprehensively
survey both buildings for all asbestos and other
hazardous materials. An extensive abatement was undertaken
which resulted in a major remodel of Buildings A
and B in Heintz Center. The project included the
abatement of asbestos-containing fireproofing on
all corridor wall extensions to the roof deck, asbestos-containing
pipe and fitting covers, asbestos-containing exterior
wall insulation, and asbestos-containing flooring.
Demolition of most interior wall partitions was also
a part of the abatement project. (See also Projects:
Educational.)
Lincoln Elementary
School
Pre -demolition Survey & Abatement Design
After acquiring the Lincoln Elementary School,
Winona State University demolished the building
to increase available parking for the College.
Minnesota State law requires that all asbestos
and other hazardous materials be abated/removed
from buildings before demolition.
Kane and Johnson
Architects performed a survey and designed the
abatement of this old elementary school prior to
its being torn down. Items containing asbestos
included thermal systems insulation, floor tile
and mastic, linoleum, and window putty. The abatement
contractor also inspected Univent systems for suspect
asbestos. Lighting fixtures and bulbs, thermostats,
door closers, PC board devices, air conditioners
etc. were also removed as they contained PCBs,
mercury, refrigerant gases, or lead.
Goodhue County
Government Center
Clean up contamination, Abate ACM & re-insulate
heating lines
Kane and Johnson Architects was called to evaluate
the risk of suspect asbestos pipe insulation in
the Government Center. Insulation had fallen off
of pipes in the attic and contaminated that entire
space as did the vermiculite insulation found around
the perimeter of the attic space.
A survey of the
contaminated attic space and the rest of the building
was conducted prior to designing abatement of these
spaces. Asbestos containing materials included
thermal systems insulation, and boiler cover and
breeching. Also included in this contract was the
re-insulation of the heating lines in the Basement
and the Boiler Room after abatement.
